Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, DC area, and one of only thirty-nine in the United States. Our clinicians are dedicated to providing the best professional care, delivered with compassion, for all patients. Lombardi's internationally-renowned physicians treat virtually every type of cancer, including mesothelioma, breast, lung, colorectal, prostate, head and neck, and cancers of the blood. Along with cutting-edge cancer care, we offer a program of innovative clinical trials and a full range of supportive care services to improve our patients' health and quality of life.
When a patient is faced with a diagnosis of cancer, a number of physicians and clinical staff members are typically involved in his or her care. After the initial evaluation with laboratory, radiologic and pathologic studies, most patients require the services of a surgeon, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist or hematologist. Additional medical or surgical specialists, such as reconstructive surgeons or surgical subspecialists, may also be required. Case managers and oncology nurses coordinate care, and provide vital support and information. Nutritional consultants, pain management specialists and psychosocial counselors are also closely involved, making recommendations that are of critical importance to an ideal treatment plan.
This multidisciplinary approach to the care of our patients is what we believe defines Lombardi's excellence in cancer care. All members of a patient's care-giving team work together designing a treatment plan and support services to meet the patient's unique requirements. The multi-disciplinary thoracic cancer clinic meets monthly to provide ongoing support and coordinated care that brings together in one appointment all of the specialists involved in our patients' treatment.
